Godfrey CLARKE d.1670
Biographical Note
Lawyer, of Somersall, near Chesterfield. He belonged to a family of lawyers there; both his father Godfrey (1559-1634), and his grandfather Nicholas (d.1590) were lawyers there, and books passed down the family.
Books
Clarke's probate inventory noted "certain old lawe books and other bookes in the closet in the dyningroom", valued at £3 6s 8d, a frame for books with curtains, and a cupboard (£1 15s), and the library in the study, valued at £30. In 1634, the elder Godfrey's books were appraised at £6 13s 4d.
