Roger MEREDITH d.1701
Biographical Note
Son of Sir William Meredith, 1st baronet, of Leeds Castle, Kent. BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1658, MA Trinity Hall 1662, fellow of Trinity Hall 1662-87. Admitted at Lincoln's Inn 1657; Master in Chancery 1688-1700. Gresham Professor of Law, 1673-87, secretary to Sir William Temple 1674-80, Fellow of the Royal Society 1681.
Books
Meredith's library, together with that of "an eminent merchant lately deceas'd", was sold by retail sale in London beginning 14 July 1704. No catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in The Daily Courant as "a curious collection of books in law, civil law, history, divinity, travels, memoirs, etc". Meredith's will has no mention of books; it divided estates in Wales, left him by his father, among his three youngest nephews, but also refers to debts needing to be discharged, and a bequest to his nephew Dr George Oxenden, who had been a particular friend to him during his "late loss by fire".
