Son of [[family::Sir John Stanhope]] (d.[[date of death::1609]]). Knighted in 1605; purchased the baroncy of Shelford in 1616.

Matriculated at [[education::Leiden University]] in 1649 and travelled in Europe before returning to [[location::England]] in 1656 following the death of his grandfather. Appointed [[occupation::lord chamberlain]] to [[associates::Queen Catherine of Braganza]] in 1652, made [[occupation::colonel]] of a foot regiment in 1667, DCL in 1669, [[occupation::steward of the honour of Tutbury]] in 1670 and elected [[occupation::fellow]] of the [[organisations::Royal Society]] in 1708
 
 
He married Catherine, (d.1636) daughter of Francis, Lord Hastings in 1605 and after her death married Anne (d.1667), widow of Sir Humphrey Ferrers and daughter of Sir John Pakington of Westwood, Worcestershire.

Philip STANHOPE, 2nd Earl of Chesterfield 1633-1713

Biographical Note

Born in the parish of St Mary Cray, Kent, son of Henry Stanhope, styled Lord Stanhope (d.1634). Matriculated at Leiden University in 1649 and travelled in Europe before returning to England in 1656 following the death of his grandfather. Appointed lord chamberlain to Queen Catherine of Braganza in 1652, made colonel of a foot regiment in 1667, DCL in 1669, steward of the honour of Tutbury in 1670 and elected fellow of the Royal Society in 1708
