Thomas THYNNE 1687/8-1710

Thomas Thynne's bookplate (British Museum Franks Collection *240)

Biographical Note

Son of Henry Frederick Thynne of Old Windsor (1644-1705), clerk to the privy council and keeper of the Royal Library; nephew of Thomas Thynne, Viscount Weymouth. Matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford 1704, but did not graduate.

Books

Thynne used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 29456/*240). The extent of his library is not known; his father's lengthy will directed that all his estate and goods (including books) be sold by his trustees to clear debts and make various settlements around his family. His own nuncupative will, testified to by those who attended him when he died of smallpox, suggests that his books passed to his uncle, Viscount Weymouth, to be held on trust "in case of a daughter".
