Biographical Note

Younger son of Jonathan Belcher, American colonial governor. BA Harvard College 1728, MA 1731; he came to England where he was admitted at the Middle Temple in 1730 (barrister, 1734) and also awarded an MA from Trinity College, Cambridge. He was appointed the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Nova Scotia in 1753, and was Lieutenant Governor there 1761-63. He was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1768.

Books

Belcher used an engraved armorial bookplate, noting his membership of the Middle Temple (Franks 2066); the extent and disposition of his library are not known.
