Biographical Note
John Thomas (Erskine), 25th/8th Earl of Mar, was born to John Francis Erskine 24th/7th Earl of Mar and Frances Floyer, Countess of Mar in Alloa, 1772. He married Janet Miller in 1795 and died in 1828.
Books
Thomas's library was sold at auction by D. Speare of Edinburgh in 1829. The auction consisted of 2035 lots which included 141 folios and one incunabulum (lot 120). The books are mostly 18th and early 19th century printings, but there are some 16th and 17th century volumes from notable printers such as Robert Estienne and Antoine Vérard. Subjects include theology, classics, history, law, poetry, biography, novels, travel, science, botany, dictionaries, and music.
