Sir John PRATT 1657-1725

Biographical Note

Born in Oxford, son of Richard Pratt, a member of a gentry family whose fortunes had suffered during the Civil War. BA Wadham College, Oxford 1676, fellow 1678, MA 1679; he was admitted at the Inner Temple in 1675 (barrister, 1682). Pursuing a legal career in London and Exeter, he became a serjeant at law in 1700, and was subsequently involved in numerous high profile cases. MP for Midhurst, 1711-13, knighted, and made a judge in the Court of King's Bench 1714, Lord Chief Justice 1718.

Books

Pratt's library, together with all his plate and household goods, was auctioned in London, beginning 27 January 1726; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Post.
