Biographical Note

Of Bayhall, Kent, Amherst was the eldest son of Richard Amherst and his second wife Margaret, youngest daughter of Sir Thomas Palmer, Bart of Wingham. In 1627 Amherst married Dorothy, daughter of John Cradock of Luddesdowne. The pair had a son, William, (1641/2-63) and a daughter, Dorothy.
