Son of Charles Cecil, styled Viscount Cranborne (bap. 1619, d. 1660), and his wife, Lady Diana Maxwell (c.1623–1675)
Books=
in 1637, in manuscripts at Hatfield; books were also held in other family houses. The library now at Hatfield House (moved from London in the early 18th century) was largely formed initially by James' great-grandfather Robert Cecil and great-great-grandfather, William, and added to by the successive generations of the family. A number of manuscripts originally owned by Burghley, which descended to Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury (1626-85) were auctioned in London, 21.11.1687.
