William CARR 1664-1720

Biographical Note

Son of William Carr of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, merchant. Matriculated University College, Oxford 1683, admitted to Lincoln's Inn 1692. Member of the Eastland Company from 1687, the Hostmen's Company from 1689, and the Merchant Adventurer's Company of Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1699. He became an alderman of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1688, was mayor of the city 1689-1690, 1702-1703 and 1505-1706. He was elected its Member of Parliament in 1690 and held the position until his death. He was also a commissioner of excise from 1698-1700, and 1714 until his death.

Books

Carr's books were sold by retail sale in London beginning 6 March 1721, alongside those of an unnamed legal counsellor and the vicar John Herbert. The catalogue describes the sale as 'Consisting of very valuable books, in most faculties and languages; particularly law, statute, civil, and common, English and other historians; Parliamentary affairs, trade, husbandry and divinity... Also a large Collection of the Classicks... Likewise several curious MSS. chiefly Law, and also MSS, Sermons fairly written, and a Collection of Volumes of Pamphlets, Plays, and Sermons'. The catalogue makes no distinction between the three libraries, and divides the 1885 books by format, subject and language.
