John HERBERT ca.1670-1720
Biographical Note
Son of Nathaniel Herbert of London. Educated at Westminster School, BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1691/2, MA 1695. Vicar of Ridge, Hertfordshire from 1718 until his death.
Books
Herbert's books were sold by retail sale in London beginning 6 March 1721, alongside those of an unnamed legal counsellor and the MP William Carr. The catalogue describes the sale as 'Consisting of very valuable books, in most faculties and languages; particularly law, statute, civil, and common, English and other historians; Parliamentary affairs, trade, husbandry and divinity... Also a large Collection of the Classicks... Likewise several curious MSS. chiefly Law, and also MSS, Sermons fairly written, and a Collection of Volumes of Pamphlets, Plays, and Sermons'. The catalogue makes no distinction between the three libraries, and divides the 1885 books by format, subject and language.
