Biographical Note

Born in Gressenhall, Norfolk. Son of Roger L'Estrange of Hoe, journalist and translator. Educated at Walsingham and Bury St Edmunds before being admitted to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge in 1697. Proceeded LLB in 1702. Admitted at Gray's Inn in 1700 and called to the bar in 1710. He was a barrister and also served as steward of the college manors.

Books

L'Estrange's probate inventory includes over 670 books, valued at £107 0s 10d (from a total estate valued at £168 17s 4d). The vast majority are unitemised, being described only as 'Five hundred thirty & six Books'. The listed volumes are mostly in English and Latin, with some Greek. Only a handful of the books deal with the law, and Leedham-Green suggests that his legal works could be among the unitemised books, with the listed titles being his more general reading, covering a range of subjects including history, geography, literature, grammar and theology.
