Biographical Note
Charles Chalmers of Portlethen was the second son of James Chalmers, Professor of Philosophy in the Marischal College of Aberdeen. He was admitted to the Society of Writers to the Signet in 1704 as an apprentice to William Thomson but is recorded as not practicing.
He was married firstly to Jean, daughter of Alexander Boog of Burnhouses, Berwickshire, and secondly to Helen, daughter of Alexander Young, Bishop of Edinburgh. He held a commission as Captain in the Scots Guards but sold his Commission in 1714. He fought on the Jacobite side at Sheriffmuir in 1715 where he was killed.
