John HAMPDEN 1653-96
Biographical Note
Of Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire; MP for Buckinghamshire 1679. He was imprisoned in the tower in 1683 for conspiring against the succession of James II. He was arrested, found guilty and, unable to pay the £40,000 fine, again imprisoned. MP for Wendover in 1681 and 1689 but failed to secure seats in the subsequent parliaments.
