Vincent ALSOP 1630-1703

Biographical Note

Born at South Collingham, Nottinghamshire, son of George Alsop, rector there. Matriculated at St John’s College, Cambridge 1648, but did not graduate. Assistant master at Oakham School, Rutland during the 1650s, and rector of Wilby, Northamptonshire (ejected 1662). He remained in the area as an independent minister, was briefly jailed, and was licensed to preach as a Presbyterian at his house in Geddington in 1672. Minister to the congregation at Tothill Street, Westminster 1677-1703. He published numerous tracts and theological works and was an important, and influential, agent in the shaping of Presbyterian policies and responses to events in late Stuart London.

The retail sale of Alsop’s library was advertised in The Daily Courant in July 1703, to be sold by Daniel Browne in Exeter Exchange, beginning 9 July. No catalogue is known to survive.
