Biographical Note

Son of Charles Cecil, styled Viscount Cranborne (bap. 1619, d. 1660), and his wife, Lady Diana Maxwell (c.1623–1675)

The library now at Hatfield House (moved from London in the early 18th century) was largely formed initially by James' great-grandfather Robert Cecil and great-great-grandfather, William, and added to by the successive generations of the family. A number of manuscripts originally owned by Burghley, which descended to Robert Bruce, 1st Earl of Ailesbury (1626-85) were auctioned in London, 21.11.1687.
