William TEMPEST 1682-1761

Biographical Note

Son of William Tempest, protonothary of the Copurt of Common Pleas. Matriculated at King's College, Cambridge 1700, but did not graduate; he was later admitted at the Inner Temple went on to follow his father as a prothonotary in Common Pleas. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1712 and lived mostly at Cranbrook, Kent.

Books

Tempest used an engraved armorial bookplate dated 1702, which was later re-engraved with the date 1722 and his place of residence as Cranbrook (Franks 29079-80). The extent of his library is not known; his will has no specific mention of books, which would have been divided between his sons William and George along with the rest of the residue of his goods.
