Humphrey HAGGETT or HAGGITT 1602-1634

Biographical Note

Son of Bartholomew Haggett (d.1660), merchant and member of the East India Company, of Mincing Lane, London. Matriculated at St John's College, Oxford 1619, but did not graduate; admitted at Gray's Inn 1624. He was secretary to Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel ca.1621-29, and MP for Chichester 1625-26.

Books

There are over 20 books in the library of Chevening House, near Sevenoaks, with inscriptions of Humphrey Haggett or other members of the family, including some which belonged to Bartholomew (presumably his father), or Paul Haggett. Their imprints date from the 1530s to the 1620s and they are thought to have been acquired en bloc at some point by James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope (ca.1673-1721).

Characteristic Markings

Most of these books carry the motto "Alterius non sit qui suus esse potest" (a quotation from Paracelsus), as well as the Haggett name.
