Christopher BATHURST d.ca.1684

Biographical Note

Eldest son of John Bathurst (d.1659), a successful London physician whose patients included Oliver Cromwell. Matriculated at St Mary Hall, Oxford, 1653, and subsequently went to Padua to study medicine (D.Med, incorporated at Oxford 1660). He subsequently moved to Lincolnshire where he practised as a physician, although ‘the money and lands bequeathed to him [by his father] probably obviated the need to work’ (ODNB).

Books

Bathurst’s library was auctioned in London, beginning 24 March 1684, as a joint sale with the books of Richard Chace (unidentified) and the physician George Tonstall (1617/18-ca.1684). The sale catalogue contains 2099 lots, divided between Latin theology (389 lots), Latin medicine (565), ‘Libri philologici’ (Latin, all other subjects, 562), English divinity (312), English all other subjects (175), and ‘Libri omissi’ (96). It is not possible to determine which books came from which source.

Characteristic Markings

None of Bathurst’s books have been identified.
