Biographical Note

Son of Edward Burwell of Woodbridge, Suffolk, draper. The family were established merchant gentry in Suffolk. Matriculated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge 1629, but did not graduate; admitted at Gray's Inn 1627 (barrister, 1636). He developed a successful legal practice, bought Rougham Place, Suffolk in 1645, and was knighted in 1663,

A number of books with his armorial stamps survive (several are inscribed by his daughter, Mary, who married Robert Walpole of Houghton, Norfolk). Examples: at Houghton Hall.
