Isaac BORROW 1673-1745

One of Borrow's bookplates (British Museum Franks Collection *343)

Biographical Note

Son of John Borrow of Hulland Hall, Derbyshire. He is not found in the university lists but became a barrister of Gray's Inn, and subsequently recorder of Derby. He was also mayor of Derby in 1730 and 1742, and built a substantial house at Castlefield there.

Books

Borrow used two engraved armorial bookplates, dated 1702 and 1703, the former describing him as "of Grayes Inn", the latter as "of Holland in ye county of Derby" (Franks 3095/*343, *333). The extent of his library is not known; the bulk of his estate was inherited by his son Thomas, who was left the residue after specific bequests had been made.
