Edward CARTER -1687

Biographical Note

Of Hertfordshire; matriculated at Peterhouse, Cambridge 1634, although no graduation is recorded. Vicar of Thorpe, 1661, Rector of St Albans 1662, Vicar of King’s Langley 1670, Archdeacon of St Albans 1683, Prebendary of St Paul’s 1684. Master of St Albans Grammar School 1661-9.

Books

Carter’s library was auctioned by Edward Millington in St Albans, 5 August 1689. The sale catalogue includes 761 lots, with an undefined number of tracts and pamphlets in bundles (Latin theology 174, Latin miscellaneous including geography and history 170, English all subjects 417). The preface by Millington stresses the quality and beauty of the books, and the presence of gilt backs or spine lettering is regularly noted in the body of the catalogue; it is not clear whether the collection really was remarkable, or whether this is sales technique.

Characteristic Markings

None of Carter’s books have been identified.
