John HUNGERFORD ca.1658-1729
Biographical Note
Son of Richard Hungerford of Wiltshire; apparently descended from a long established family of that name from Down Ampney, Gloucestershire. Admitted at Lincoln's Inn 1677; barrister 1687, bencher 1707, treasurer 1713. MP for Scarborough 1692-1729 (with some breaks); he was an active parliamentarian, on the Tory side. He bought an estate at Hungerford, Berkshire in 1721, where he died.
Books
In his will, Hungerford directed that his property should remain in trust for his wife until her death, after which it was to be sold with two-thirds of the proceeds going to King's College, Cambridge and the remaining third to his friend Thomas Mangey, prebendary of Durham. His library was auctioned in London, beginning 9 February 1730; no catalogue survives, but the sale was advertised in the Daily Journal and Daily Post.
