John DALRYMPLE, 1st Earl of Stair, 1648-1707

Biographical Note

Eldest son of James Dalrymple, first Viscount Stair (1619–1695). Knighted by Charles II in 1667. Admitted as an advocate to the Scottish bar in 1672. In 1687 he was appointed Lord advocate and a member of the Scottish Privy Council. He became a member of the Scottish Parliament in 1689. He succeeded as second Viscount Stair on his father's death in 1695. Queen Anne created him Earl of Stair in 1703.

Franks 7853 (Dalrymple), The Right Honble. the Earle of Stair. (Arms. Dalrymple, quartering Ross, with Dundas on an escutcheon. John, 2nd Viscount Stair, created Earl of Stair 1703, married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir John Dundas of Newliston ; died 1707.)
