Sir Hew DALRYMPLE, 1st bart, 1652-1737
Biographical Note
Third son of James Dalrymple, first Viscount Stair (1619–1695). Graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1671, followed by study at the University of Leiden. Admitted into practice as an advocate in 1677. He was elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1690 and became dean of the Faculty of Advocates in 1694 where he was involved in the establishment of the Advocates Library. In 1698 he was created a baronet in the baronetage of Nova Scotia and appointed president of the Court of Session.
