Thomas CAREY 1597-1634
Biographical Note
Second son of Sir Robert Carey, courtier, created 1st Earl of Monmouth in 1626. BA Exeter College, Oxford 1614, after which he travelled abroad. MP for Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire 1621, and for various Cornish constituencies during the 1620s. He seems not to have been active in parliamentary affairs, but was involved in court and diplomatic business, and was designated ambassador to venice shortly before his death.
Books: Carey's entry rests on a single book in the armorials database, with the Carey arms and an inscription and monogram on the titlepage "Thomas Cary"; this man is suggested as the likely owner. His will has no mention of books, bequeathing all his household goods to his wife. Examples: CUL W.12.46.
