Biographical Note
Thomas Byng was born in Wrotham, Kent, the second son of John Byng and his wife Agnes Spencer. He was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge (B.A. 1555/6, fellow 1558, M.A. 1559). He studied as a civil lawyer, taking his LLD in 1570. He held a number of university offices at Cambridge, including public orator and vice-chancellor, and was elected master of Clare Hall in 1571. As a civilian he became a member of Doctors' Commons in 1572, Regius Professor of civil law in 1574, and one of the civilian masters in chancery in 1590. In 1597 he became president of Doctors' Commons and then Dean of Arches but died shortly afterwards.

A number of his books survive in various libraries, including Emmanuel College, Cambridge (329.7.20), Cambridge University Library (Aa*.3.15 and Rel.a.55.4), Bodleian Library (Bywater (O.7.2), Sion College (Lambeth Palace D25.4/H79).
