Gerard LANGBAINE 1609-58

Biographical Note

Born at Barton Kirk, Westmorland, son of William Langbaine. Matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford in 1628; graduated BA in 1630 and MA in 1633. Ordained deacon in 1634 and made vicar of Crosthwaite, Westmorland in 1643. Provost of Queen's College, Oxford and keeper of the archives, Langbaine produced a bibliographical survey of Platonic writers in Greek and Latin and their work in Oxford, which was printed by John Fell in his Alcinoi in Platonicam philosophiam introductio (1667). A prominent scholar, he encouraged the work of John Greaves, Samuel Clarke, Sir Henry Spelman and William Dugdale and was a friend of Ben Jonson.

Books

Gave books to Queen’s; some of his manuscripts were bought by the Bodleian library.
