Biographical Note

Of Helmingham Hall, Suffolk. The Tollemaches were a major East Anglian landowning family and the family library was well established during the time of the 1st baronet, including manuscripts of East Anglian monastic provenance.

Books

Some of the books/manuscripts of John Maitland, 1st Duke of Lauderdale (d.1682) came into the family’s possession through Maitland’s marriage to Elizabeth Dysart, widow of Sir Lionel Tollemache (d.1669). Much of the family library was dispersed at Sotheby’s in a series of sales 1961-69.
