John SPADEMAN 1648/49-1708
Biographical Note
Born in Lincolnshire, son of Thomas Spademan, clerk, of Althorpe. BA Magdalene College, Cambridge 1669, MA 1674. Vicar of Swaton, Lincolnshire 1673, rector of Llandynam, Montgomeryshire 1674. He subsequently resigned these livings and moved to Rotterdam, to be pastor of the nonconformist English church there; he returned to England ca.1700, and acted for a short time as a nonconformist minister in Lincoln. A proposal to reinstate him at Llandynam was opposed by the Dean and Chapter of Bangor ca.1695. A number of his sermons were published; the University of Wales, Lampeter holds a small collection of his papers, including annotations on the Bible.

Calamy noted that Spademan was “a very hard student”, who increased his library while he was in Holland. His library was sold by auction in London by Thomas Ballard, beginning 21 February 1709. The catalogue contained 3036 lots, as well as a number of bound volumes of French and English pamphlets, divided between Latin and Greek theology (905), Miscellaneous Latin and Greek (1105), French, Italian, Spanish and Dutch books (468), and English books (558). The catalogue, which claimed to comprise his entire collection, noted the additional advantage that many of the books contained “curious remarks wrote by his own hand”.
