Samuel STANCLIFFE 1631-1705

Biographical Note

Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, son of John Stancliffe, draper. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1652, MA 1655. Curate of Wokingham, Berkshire 1657, rector of Great Stanmore, Middlesex 1658, ejected 1662. Remained in and around London as a nonconformist minister, and became pastor of a congregation at Rotherhithe, Surrey in 1692.

Books

Stancliffe's will has no specific mention of books; all the residue of his estate was left to be divided between his wife and sons in law. His library was sold by auction in London, beginning 6 March 1706; no catalogue survives, but the advertisement in The Daily Courant referred to "a collection of very valuable books in Greek, Latin and English, neatly bound and good editions".

Characteristic Markings

None of Stancliffe's books have been identified.
