Robert BAYLES d.1624
Biographical Note
Born in county Durham, probably in Greatham near Hartlepool. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1613, MA 1616; fellow, 1614-24.
Books
Bayles' will refers to books in various ways although it is not evident that he had a sizeable personal collection. He bequeathed 50 shillings to the parish of Greadham [Greatham] towards the purchase of a new Church Bible, and noted that there were books in his study belonging to his tutor, Mr Hutton, which should be returned to him. The first instruction in the will is "I strictly charge that all my written paper books both small and great be forthwith burnt". He notes that "Mr [William] Williams the bookbinder will pretend that I owe him something but he is indebted unto me". The residue of Bayles' goods were left to William Wright, fellow of St John's, subsequently rector of Benefield, Northhamptonshire (d.1658).
