Gilbert WIMBERLY 1594-1653
Biographical Note
Son of Thomas Wimberly, of Spalding, Lincolnshire. BA Trinity College, Cambridge 1616, MA 1619, fellow 1618, DD 1630. Rector of Stansfield, Suffolk 1621-35, minister of St Margaret's, Westminster 1630, rector of Englefield, Berkshire 1635; prebendary of Wells 1632, prebendary of Westminster 1643. Chaplain to Charles I. Deprived of his livings during the Civil War, and may have spent some time imprisoned.
Books
Walker's Sufferings of the clergy states that Wimberly lost a library worth £1000 when his belongings were plundered during the Civil War. This is all that is known about the extent of his library; his will stated that all his "rings, jewels, books, goods chattels and household stuff" should go to his son Gilbert, except that his wife was to receive (among other bequests) "the Bishop of Norwich his works" [i.e. the works of Joseph Hall].
