John TREGONWELL d.1680
Biographical Note
The identity of this man is not certain but he was probably a descendant of Sir John Tregonwell (d.1565), who bought the Milton Abbas estate, in Dorset, following the dissolution of the monasteries. A wall tablet in Milton Abbas church records his date of death as 1680 and he is presumably not, therefore, the man of this name (d.1682) who was MP for Corfe Castle between 1659 and 1679. High sheriff of Dorset, 1670.
Books
Tregonwell gave ca.60 books to the church of Milton Abbas, as a thankful acknowledgment of God’s mercy in preserving him when he fell from the top of the church; most of these books were destroyed in 1940 as war salvage.
