Charles CORNWALLIS, 2nd Baron Cornwallis of Eye 1632-1673
Biographical Note
Born at Culford, Suffolk, son of Sir Frederick Cornwallis, 1st Baronet, of Brome Hall, Suffolk (later (1661) 1st Baron Cornwallis of Eye), equerry to Charles I. MP for Eye, 1660-62, when he inherited his father’s barony; he was noted as very active member of the Commons during his time there. Justice of the Peace for Suffolk, 1662-73.
Books
Two prayer books with Cornwallis’s armorial binding stamps are known to survive, one of which is also stamped “Brome Chappel”, and which were doubtless made thus for the family chapel. There is no evidence for any private library as such developed by Cornwallis. Examples: BL C.67.g.8, NAL CLE J18.
