Sir Edward CLIVE 1704-1771
Biographical Note
Son of Edward Clive of Wormbridge, Herefordshire. Matriculated at University College, Oxford 1722, but did not graduate; he was admitted at Lincoln's Inn in 1719 (barrister, 1725). He became steward of Newcastle under Lyme in 1725, and deputy justice of Carmarthen in 1741, the same year in ehich he was elected MP for Mitchell, Cornwall. He became a judge of the Exchequer in 1745, and of the Court of Common Pleas in 1753, when he was knighted; he retired from the bench in 1770.
Books
Clive used an engraved armorial bookplate (Franks 6134). The extent of his library is not known; in his will, he bequeathed all the residue of his estate and effects to his wife Judith.
