William PETRE, 2nd Baron Petre 1575-1637

Biographical Note

Son of John Petre, 1st Baron Petre, from whom he inherited the title and family estates at Ingatestone, Essex in 1613; the family were Roman Catholics. BA Exeter Collee, Oxford 1591, admitted at the Middle Temple 1593. MP for Essex 1597.

Books

Money was spent on decorating a study in the late 16th century; the Petre family accounts in Folger Shakespeare Library manuscript 1772 include a note of 35 books purchased. His will has no specific mention of books; all the residue of his estate and household goods was left to his son Robert, who died a year after him. ‘My Lords library’ was estimated to be worth £35 in 1639.
