Biographical Note

Son of Sir George Fletcher, 1st bart, of Hutton Hall, Cumberland, from whom he inherited the title and family estates in 1700. Matriculated at Queen's College, Oxford 1678, but did not graduate. MP for Cockermouth, 1689; he was an alderman and mayor of Carlisle, and held other local administrative offices. After inheriting the baronetcy, he converted to Roman Catholicism, settled his estates on a distant cousin, and retired to the English monastery at Douai where he died.
