Thomas POVEY 1613/4-1705
Biographical Note
Of London; son of Justinian Povey (d.c.1652). Administrator, and merchant. Entered Gray's Inn in 1633, appointed MP for Liskeard in 1647 and secluded in 1648. An original member of the Royal Society, Povey served on its council in 1663, 1679, and 1691.
Books
The library at Dyrham Park, Gloucestershire (now partly dispersed) began to be built up by Thomas’ nephew and heir William Blathwayt (1649?-1717), who bought the estate, and who inherited books owned by both Thomas and Justinian Povey. Thomas was noted as a collector and connoisseur, who gave books to the College of Arms.
