John HARINGTON, 2nd Baron Harington 1592-1614

Biographical Note

Baptized at Stepney, Middlesex; son of John Harington (1539/40-1613). Educated at Sidney Sussex, Cambridge, 1607-8. Created a knight of the Bath in 1604 and developed a close friendship with Prince Henry. His position at court was somewhat shaken by Henry's early death in 1612 and the inheritance of his father's debts in 1613. He died prematurely in 1614.

Books

In 1616 Anne (ca.1554-1620), widow of John, 1st Baron Harington (1539/40-1613) gave ca.120 books to found a parish library for Oakham, Rutland; in 1626 her daughter Lucy Russell, Countess of Bedford (1581-1627) gave books to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. Both sets are likely to have belonged originally to John the 2nd Baron, and/or other members of the family.
