Richard LUMLEY d.1694

Biographical Note

Born at Carleton Miniott, Yorkshire, son of William Lumley, yeoman. BA St John's College, Cambridge 1666, MA 1669. Vicar of Stainton, Yorkshire 1667, and curate of Guisborough and Thornaby.

Books

Lumley bequeathed ca.300 volumes to found a parish library for Stainton. Some of the books have inscriptions of his predecessors as vicars, including William Lawson and John Gillot. A 1764 catalogue lists 344 items. There are many 16th century books as well as 17th century ones. The surviving books were deposited in York Minster Library in 1911, where they remain today.

Characteristic Markings

Many of the books were inscribed by Lumley with his name.
