Josiah SIMCOX 1644/5-1682

Biographical Note

Son of John Simcox, of West Bromwich, Staffordshire. BA New Inn Hall, Oxford 1665. Assistant master at Stratford-upon-Avon, and curate for John Ward, the Vicar there, from the late 1660s; he succeeded Ward as Vicar in 1681 but died soon afterwards.

Books

Simcox’s probate inventory lists “a desk and his books”, in the study, valued at £20; the total estate value of £297 suggests a well furnished house, with musical instruments, pictures, and fishing tackle as well as the usual furniture and household items. Apart from £5 left to his father, he bequeathed all his goods to his wife Martha.

Characteristic Markings

None of Simcox’s books have been identified.
