Gilbert SHELDON 1598-1677

Biographical Note

Born at Stanton, Staffordshire, son of Roger Sheldon (d. 1635). He matriculated at Oxford in 1614, graduating BA from Trinity College in 1617. Proceeded MA at Cambridge in 1620; fellow of All Souls in 1623; BD 1628. Elected warden of All Souls in 1635 and served as pro-vice-chancellor in 1634 and 1640. He became prebendary of Gloucester in 1632, vicar of Hackney in 1633, rector of Oddington, Oxfordshire, and Ickford, Buckinghamshire in 1636 and of Newington, Oxfordshire in 1639. He became bishop of London in 1660 and Archbishop of Canterbury in 1663. Sheldon was a central figure in the restoration of the church in 1662 and was instrumental in re-establishing Lambeth Palace Library after the Restoration.

Books

Divided his books, in his will, between Lambeth Palace Library and his nephew Gilbert Dolben (though the will was later contested).
