John DALRYMPLE, 1st Earl of Stair, 1648-1707
Biographical Note
Eldest son of James Dalrymple, first Viscount Stair (1619–1695). Knighted by Charles II in 1667. Admitted as an advocate to the Scottish bar in 1672. In 1687 he was appointed Lord advocate and a member of the Scottish Privy Council. He became a member of the Scottish Parliament in 1689. He succeeded as second Viscount Stair on his father's death in 1695. Queen Anne created him Earl of Stair in 1703.
