Biographical Note

Born at Silverton, Devon, son of William Cotton, archdeacon of Totnes (and grandson of William Cotton, Bishop of Exeter). BA Christ Church, Oxford 1636, MA 1638, DD 1661. Rector of St Thomas and St Peter, Winchester, and minor canon of Winchester Cathedral 1640 (subsequently ejected). Canon of Exeter Cathedral 1660 (treasurer, 1672); archdeacon of Cornwall 1660, vicar of Bampton, Oxfordshire 1663.

Cotton bequeathed ca.1200 volumes [i.e. the bulk, or all, of his library?] to Exeter Cathedral. The Cathedral donors’ register (MS 3733) records the gift as comprising 377 folios, 216 quartos and 609 octavos.
