Baptist NOEL, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough 1684-1714

Biographical Note

Son of Baptist Noel of North Luffenham, Rutland, MP for Rutland. He succeeded his cousin Wriothesley Noel, 2nd Earl of Gainsborough, as 3rd Earl in 1690. He married Dorothy Manners, daughter of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland in 1707; he died of smallpox in 1714, she of the same disease in 1739.

Characteristic Markings

Both Noel and Dorothy used a series of engraved armorial bookplates (Franks 21939-42/*39). The extent and disposition of the library is not known.
