Samuel Francis SWINDEN 1713/4-1764
Biographical Note
Son of Tobias Swinden of Rochester, clergyman. BA University College, Oxford 1730, MA 1733. Rector of Stifford, Essex 1754; he is also recorded as having kept a school at Greenwich. A portrait of General James Wolfe drawn ca.1742 has a note on the back saying that it was made for Swinden, who was then Wolfe's tutor.
Books
Swinden used an engraved armorial bookplate, made sometime after 1733 (Franks 28661). The extent of his library is not known; his will directed that all his "manuscripts and papers of every sort except such as relate to matters of account" be burnt, but otherwise has no specific reference to books, which would have passed to trustees, on behalf of his family, with the rest of his goods and chattels.
