Robert VAUGHAN 1591/2-1667

Biographical Note

Of Hengwrt, Merioneth; son of Hywel Fuchan ap Gruffydd ap Hywel (d.1639), of Gwengraig, near Dolgellau. Matriculated Oriel College, Oxford but did not graduate. Married Catherine (1594-1663), daughter of Griffith Nanney, with whom he had eight children. An antiquary, he translated historical works and is the author of British Antiquities Revived (1662).

Books

Assembled a significant collection of early Welsh manuscripts which included the oldest manuscripts of the laws of Wales, of Arthurian and other romances, and of the holy grail, as well as other historical, poetic and theological works. Many of his manuscripts are now in the National Library of Wales; his printed books were dispersed in the 19th century and earlier.
