Robert SHIRLEY, Viscount Tamworth 1692-1714

Biographical Note

Eldest son of Robert Shirley (1673-1699), of Staunton Harold, Leicestershire, and elder brother of Ferrers Shirley. He inherited extensive estates in Staffordshire from his father in 1699, when he also became heir to his grandfather Robert Shirley, 14th Baron Ferrers; when he became 1st Earl Ferrers in 1711, his grandson assumed the courtesy title of Viscount Tamworth. MP for Leicestershire 1713-14.

Characteristic Markings

Two engraved armorial bookplates were made for him (not earlier than 1711, the year in which his grandfather was created Earl Ferrers, to which the plates refer; Franks 26785-6). Given his death shortly thereafter, it seems unlikely that he would have had much of a library.
