John SHARP 1644-1714
Born at Bradford, son of Thomas Sharp, salter. BA Christ's College, Cambridge 1663, MA 1667. Chaplain to Sir Heneage Finch, whose patronage helped him become archdeacon of Berkshire 1673, rector of St Giles in the Fields, London and prebendary of Norwich 1675. Dean of Canterbury 1689, Archbishop of York 1691. While much embroiled in the disputes and politics which came with his position, he was noted for the pastoral care he sought to bring to his responsibilities, based on personal piety; he was favoured by Queen Anne.
Sharp began the Sharp family collection which became the Bamburgh Castle Library , now in Durham University Library. He was also a keen numismatist, and bequeathed a coin collection to Ralph Thoresby.
